Now that the WHL trade deadline has passed and the roster is basically settled, the next order of business for the Regina Pats is to name a captain. Slap shots has leaned that Colten Teubert will be formally introduced as early as Tuesday and will make his captain's debut the next night against the Brandon Wheat kings. Regina has been without a captain since Victor Bartley graduated following last season. Head coach Curtis Hunt declined to name a replacement to start this season, instead holding an audition between Teubert,Eberle,Leffler,Mitchell,Delahey who was traded Sunday).
All five players have been rotating the A's, but that experiment is now over. With Teubert,Eberle,Leffler graduating this season, Mitchell is regarded as the heir apparent. For the rest of this season, however, the reins go to Teubert. As stated previously, the Pats were hesitant to name a captain early in the season partly due to the uncertainty of the trade deadline. Why award the 'C' to someone who wasn't going to be around past Jan. 10?
Now that Teubert is guaranteed to finish his WHL career in Regina, he gets the nod. In fact, Eberle had a part to play in the decision by telling Regina's brass that he endorsed his Team Canada sidekick. Although Eberle handles all the attention he receives very well, he is under tremendous pressure due to the spotlight that's shining on him every day, placing constant demands on his time. He never complains, but it has to take a personal toll.
With all that weight on his shoulders in addition to being the home-town hero it might be wise to not add any more pressure and just let him focus on what he does best. Teubert converts the job and his leadership has impressed the brass of Team Canada in addition to the Pats, who've seen Teubert mature as a person and a player over the past few months.
